The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees transportation in the city, today announced the receipt of more than $49 million in state bond funds to support the Central Subway and Persia Triangle projects.

The Central Subway Project will receive $48.4 million in state Public Transportation Modernization, Improvement, and Service Enhancement Account Program (PTMISEA) funds, allowing for continued progress on extending the T Third Line through SoMa, Union Square and Chinatown. The Persia Triangle Project, which will improve pedestrian amenities and transit circulation at three intersections in southern San Francisco, will receive $675,734 in PTMISEA funds. Read more.

Today Mayor Edwin M. Lee and Supervisors Scott Wiener and Christina Olague launched the Transportation Sustainability Program (TSP), a groundbreaking program that re-examines current practices with new development and its impact to the City’s overall transportation network.

“San Francisco is pioneering a new way to look at transportation through the Transportation Sustainability Program,” said Mayor Lee. “Supporting our City’s Transit First policy, this new innovative program ensures transportation improvements are felt system-wide and Citywide to improve transportation use by all residents.” Read more.

Today Mayor Edwin M. Lee and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), which oversees all transportation in the City, including the Municipal Railway (Muni), joined U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein, Chair of the SFMTA Centennial Honorary Committee, to launch the 100th anniversary celebration of the Municipal Railway, founded on December 28, 1912.

As the first publicly-owned transit system in a major U.S. city, Muni was inaugurated by Mayor James Rolph, Jr. at Geary and Kearny streets with Car No. 1. That streetcar has been restored and will now join Muni’s historic streetcar fleet which runs on the F Market and Wharves Line. The Citywide celebration through December will include San Francisco’s transit history and the City’s current integrated surface transportation network that encompasses pedestrians, bicyclists, transit, parking, traffic and taxis. Today Mayor Edwin M. Lee and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) announced that the federal government has once again demonstrated strong support for planned improvements to public transportation in San Francisco. President Barack Obama’s federal budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2013 includes a recommendation for $150 million in funding for the Central Subway Project and $10 million to implement bus rapid transit on Van Ness Avenue.

Today Mayor Edwin M. Lee and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) announced that the number of people riding bicycles in San Francisco increased seven percent since last year and increased 71 percent over the past six years.

"Whether people are biking to work, to school or just to have fun, these latest bicycle counts demonstrate that San Francisco is a national leader in bicycle ridership," said Mayor Lee. "We are using innovative strategies such as bike sharing and installing sharrows, dedicated bike lanes and bike boxes, to make sure that our road network is safe and convenient." Read more.
