Mayor Welcomes America's Cup World Series RacesThe America's Cup World Series (ACWS) Season Two kicks off in the summer of 2012 in the United States, with two events in San Francisco.
 
The opening event, from August 21-26, 2012, will feature eight teams from across the globe (as the teams continue to hone their skills on the physically-challenging AC45 wing-sailed catamarans.
 
The America's Cup Village for the first ACWS will be located at Marina Green, along San Francisco's northern waterfront. Admission is FREE and each day has a full program of food, fun, fast boats and family entertainment

Sunday Streets: 2012 Season Opens

Sunday Streets: 2012 Season OpensThe eight-month Sunday Streets 2012 season opens streets to pedestrians, cyclists and people-powered wheels of all kinds by temporarily removing vehicular traffic on select Sundays, transforming street-space usually reserved for cars into recreational space for everyone to enjoy safely.

Sunday Streets is a series of events put on by the City of San Francisco to encourage health, community and fun, inspired by similar events in cities throughout the world.  A Sunday Streets event creates a large, temporary, public space by closing off stretches of a neighborhood’s streets to automobile traffic, and opening them to pedestrians, bicyclists, and activities for several hours on a predetermined Sunday. Golden Gate Bridge: Celebration Plans and Closure 5/27 9-10pm

Golden-gate-bridgeMay 27, 2012 marks 75 years for the Golden Gate Bridge and a wonderful opportunity to recognize the history, beauty, and ingenuity of this famous span. A spectacular festival is being planned for the 2012 Memorial Day weekend. Recalling the historic "Golden Gate Bridge Fiesta" in 1937, the event will tell the story of the Bridge and provide an opportunity for the entire community to celebrate together.

Neighborhoods Renewal: Mayor Announces Invest in Neighborhoods Initiative

Mayor Announces Invest in Neighborhoods InitiativeMayor Edwin M. Lee today launched his Invest in Neighborhoods Initiative, a renewed effort to marshal City and private sector resources and services to help revitalize the City’s neighborhood commercial corridors, support neighborhood small businesses and boost neighborhood job creation. The Invest in Neighborhoods Initiative will build on the City’s existing patchwork of programs that support neighborhood small businesses and commercial corridors and aims to prioritize, leverage and better coordinate resources and services available across City departments, nonprofits and the private sector to targeted commercial corridors throughout the City.

Standing with District 10 Supervisor Malia Cohen on the vibrant, revitalized San Bruno Avenue in the Portola District, Mayor Lee also announced the first phase of the new neighborhood initiative – the convening of the Invest in Neighborhoods Strategy Working Group of City department heads, neighborhood business leaders and technical experts to evaluate existing resources and tools, identify best practices and make recommendations for a more comprehensive strategy and additional resources through the Mayor’s FY 2012-2013 budget. Lee today announced the return of the popular Sunday Streets program with a full schedule of car-free events starting Sunday, March 11th, along the Embarcadero. The eight-month Sunday Streets 2012 season opens streets to pedestrians, cyclists and people-powered wheels of all kinds by temporarily removing vehicular traffic on select Sundays, transforming street-space usually reserved for cars into recreational space for everyone to enjoy safely.

“Sunday Streets not only showcases San Francisco’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, it is a proven cost-effective way to better health for San Franciscans,” said Mayor Lee. “We’re committed to ensuring the program’s continued growth and success in 2012 and beyond. We look forward to returning to Chinatown, doing a more frequent Mission route, and adding a new route in the Southwest neighborhoods of our City to bring the benefits of Sunday Streets to more San Francisco neighborhoods.” Read more.
