Technology Access: Mayor Launches First Living Innovation Zone

Technology_29oct12Mayor Edwin M. Lee today, as part of Innovation Month, officially opened the nation's first Living Innovation Zone (LIZ) – an enterprise that links partners with the City to sponsor the installation of innovative exhibit spaces that make science and technology more accessible in public for the public. The first Zone, a partnership with the Exploratorium and the Yerba Buena Community Benefit District (YBCBD), is being launched on Market Street and Yerba Buena Lane.

"This unique initiative brings innovation that is sometimes behind closed doors and brings it out into the light of day where we can all learn and be inspired by it," said Mayor Lee. "I'm excited to see our sidewalks come alive with new ideas, and I believe it is initiatives like these that underscore our commitment to innovation and helps secure our reputation as the Innovation Capital of the World." Financial Stability: City Credit Rating Upgraded to Highest in City History

Financial Stability: City Credit Rating Upgraded to Highest in Its HistoryMayor Edwin M. Lee today announced major bond rating agencies have upgraded and affirmed San Francisco's strong credit after the City met with Moody's Investors Service (Moody's), Standard & Poor's (S&P) and Fitch Ratings (Fitch) in August. 

"At a time when many cities and counties across California and the U.S. have seen their credit ratings suffer amid lingering financial uncertainty, San Francisco's upgraded bond ratings are leading the state," said Mayor Lee. "We are creating investor confidence in our City with strategic investments while applying strict budgetary and financial controls to protect San Francisco's continuing economic recovery. We must continue our work that has stabilized San Francisco's economy, created jobs, and has made San Francisco an economic engine for the entire region." Read more.

Invest in Neighborhoods: Mayor Launches Loan Program to Support Small BusinessMayor Ed Lee today announced the launch of the StepAheadSF Microloan Pilot Program, a new program that will provide $250,000 in zero percent interest loans to support small businesses in neighborhood commercial corridors citywide.  StepAheadSF, administered by Working Solutions, will provide loans to individual small businesses. The program will begin in Chinatown, which was just named one of the Top 10 Great Neighborhoods for 2013 by the American Planning Association.

"Our City's historic, culturally diverse and economically thriving neighborhoods make San Francisco a world-class destination to live, work and visit and I am honored that the American Planning Association has recognized San Francisco’s Chinatown as one of the nation’s Top 10 Great Neighborhoods," said Mayor Ed Lee. Arts in the City: Mayor Breaks Ground on New Strand Theatre

Arts in the City: Mayor Breaks Ground on New Strand TheatreMayor Edwin M. Lee joined Senator Mark Leno, Supervisor Jane Kim, the American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) and community development partners today to break ground on the Strand Theater, the newest arts venue to open in the Central Market neighborhood. The Strand Theater joins two other theaters, including the Geary Theater and the Costume Shop Theater.

"I am thrilled to see A.C.T. join the Central Market community where performing art institutions are vital in our efforts to transform the neighborhood," said Mayor Lee. "The Strand Theater will provide our City's residents and visitors with a world-class entertainment venue that will engage with the local community through arts and education, while creating jobs for our City's residents and contributing to the diverse economic vitality of the Central Market neighborhood." Health Reform: Mayor Announces Local Open Enrollment for Affordable CareMayor Edwin M. Lee today announced that San Francisco is now participating in pre-enrollment into new health coverage options that will become available on January 1, 2014 through the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
 
San Francisco is a national leader in bringing affordable health care access to its residents and is now poised to enroll an estimated 30,000 newly eligible individuals into the expanded Medi-Cal program. Additionally, the City will support the enrollment of an estimated 40,000 uninsured individuals into other health coverage products offered through Covered California, the state’s new marketplace for purchasing coverage.
