Mayor and President Chiu Highlight the Importance of Emergency Preparation
Plan will create 190,000 new construction-related jobs and addresses critical capital needs and expenditures
Mayor Gavin Newsom and Board of Supervisors President David Chiu highlighted earthquake and emergency preparedness today in the wake of several large earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, and, more recently, in Baja, California. Mayor Newsom and Supervisor Chiu also focused on the need for continued infrastructure repairs and seismic upgrades as the City prepares to commemorate the 104th anniversary of the 1906 Great Earthquake and Fire.
“Recent earthquakes in Haiti, Chile and Southern California are all too clear reminders that we must continue to prepare for the next major earthquake in our region,” said Mayor Newsom. “We’ve made great progress in recent years, but we can never let up on our work to seismically reinforce our key facilities and infrastructure to withstand a major earthquake.” Read more
