Mayor commemorates 1 year anniversary of Community Justice Center

Mayor commemorates 1 year anniversary of Community Justice Center Mayor Newsom today commemorated the one year anniversary of the Community Justice Center (CJC) and provided an update on the Center’s progress. The CJC provides accountability for lower-level criminal behavior, and addresses the root issues associated with this behavior including substance abuse or mental illness.

“The Community Justice Center is designed to ensure that people in need are connected to services and the requirements of an efficient and rehabilitative justice system,” said Mayor Newsom. “Drawing upon our network of services, the commitment of our community partners, and the compassion of our residents, the Center gives relief to the neighborhoods most affected by quality of life crimes.” Read more

City Opens 56 New Supportive Housing Units

City Opens 56 New Supportive Housing Units Mayor Gavin Newsom today joined the Glide Economic Development Corporation (GEDC) and the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) to open a newly constructed supportive housing development located at 149 Mason Street.The eight-story development is comprised of 56 fully-furnished studio units, each with kitchen and private bath. The units are targeted to persons with incomes below $9,000 per year, all of them homeless or at risk at time of entry.

“These new units represent a commitment to compassionate and effective services delivered in a manner that respects individual dignity, personal strength, and self-determination,” said Mayor Newsom. “We will continue to build both affordable housing and permanent supportive housing so that those with disabilities, or those who just need a stable home, can avoid entering the emergency shelter system as they move from crisis to stability. Mayor and Board of Supervisors Join in Support of Increased Broadband Access Mayor Gavin Newsom joined the Board of Supervisors in support of a resolution urging the Department of Technology (DT) to respond to Google’s Request for Information (RFI) with a proposal to build a fiber broadband network in San Francisco. Last month, Google announced plans to install one Gigabit fiber networks in select cities throughout the country. Interested communities have until March 26, 2010 to reply.

“High speed broadband Internet access will determine which cities thrive in the new economy. San Francisco has the opportunity to close the digital divide and create thousands of new jobs by deploying this network,” said Mayor Newsom. “I join the Board of Supervisors in support of this resolution to bring a next generation broadband network to San Francisco.” Read more

Mayor Newsom Breaks Ground on Civic Center Community Garden

Mayor Newsom Breaks Ground on Civic Center Community Garden Mayor Gavin Newsom today broke ground on a new community garden in a vacant lot owned by the City and County of San Francisco, located at McAllister and Larkin streets. The food grown at the garden will go to volunteers who help care for it.

“Urban agriculture is about far more than growing vegetables on an empty lot,” said Mayor Newsom. “It’s about revitalizing and transforming unused public spaces, connecting city residents with their neighborhoods in a new way and promoting healthier eating and living for everyone.” Read more
