Mayor Newsom Introduces Legislation to Limit Tobacco Sales Near Schools
Legislation would prohibit the issuance of new tobacco sales permits for businesses located within 1,000 feet of public and private schools in San Francisco
01/26/10 – Today Mayor Gavin Newsom introduced legislation at the Board of Supervisors that prohibits the issuance of new tobacco sales permits for businesses located within 1,000 feet of public and private schools in San Francisco.
“The research clearly shows kids start smoking and smoke more frequently when cigarette retailers are near schools,” said Mayor Newsom. “About a third of the students in California purchase their tobacco within 1,000 feet of their schools, so we’re looking to restrict this access in order to prevent children from smoking.”

Mayor Newsom Introduces Cell-Phone Radiation Labeling Legislation
Legislation would require cell phone retailers to post cell phone radiation levels at point of sale
01/26/10 – Mayor Gavin Newsom today announced major consumer right-to-know legislation that will require cell phone retailers to post cell phone radiation levels at point of sale. The ordinance will be introduced at the Board of Supervisors meeting today.
“Telephone manufacturers currently disclose cell phone radiation levels to the federal government,” said Mayor Newsom. “This same information should also be made easily accessible to the consumer.” Read more
Mayor Newsom Announces City Partnerships for Haitian Relief
01/25/10 – Mayor Newsom today announced new city efforts to raise
money for Haiti earthquake relief. These efforts include a new
partnership with Safeway Inc. to place coin counting machines in city
buildings, a new citywide payroll deduction program, and use of 311 as
a resource for Haiti donation referral.
“San Franciscans have a deep understanding of the devastation caused by natural disasters and we stand ready to assist Haiti in providing relief to the residents in the difficult days and months ahead,” said Mayor Newsom. “The City is committed to helping the residents of Haiti, and Safeway’s assistance will allow for donations in some of our city’s most visible locations.” Read more
