Gascón currently serves as Police Chief of the Mesa, Arizona Police Department.

"After sitting down with Chief Gascón and discussing his vision for our police department, he was the obvious choice to succeed Chief Fong," said Mayor Newsom. "Chief Gascón has a keen understanding of the public safety issues facing San Francisco, whether its foot patrols, sanctuary city, or gang violence – and his extensive resume shows a great deal of experience dealing with those very same issues.
